Emily puts her skills to work in our social enterprise

Although Emily’s potential was clear to everyone around her, Emily herself took a little more convincing! Now she’s a highly regarded member of our MBS team and more importantly, she loves her job.

Emily began receiving supports through our Deer Park Community Hub in 2019. Emily enjoyed group activities at Mambourin through the week and had some experience working on weekends alongside her mother, Helen, and her sister in their family food truck business. This explained Emily’s excellent kitchen skills!

Seeing Emily’s potential and capabilities, the Mambourin team asked her if she would like to engage with our Mambourin Business Solutions (MBS) team at Derrimut. But as Emily is a little shy, she declined, preferring to stay in the smaller groups at the hub.

With more encouragement and support, Emily agreed to participate in a trial workday at our Derrimut warehouse. The trial was a great success for Emily and the MBS team, soon after she was offered and accepted a position as a supported employee.

Emily has chosen to work two days per week in the warehouse, while still attending two days at the community hub – the best of both worlds!

In the workplace, Emily has proven herself to be a self-motivated, independent thinker. She also has a positive, cheerful demeanour that makes her popular among her team members.

When we asked Emily what she liked about working at Mambourin, her answer was ‘everything!’ She also added, ‘I like everyone and all my friends here. I like the supervisors.’

It seems the feeling is mutual. Brad Miller, MBS Manager said, ‘Emily is a great asset to the team – I wish we had 20 more of her!’
